I’m really doing this!

It’s official. I just booked my flight today and will be leaving October 12th for Algeciras, Spain to live, work, and learn Spanish for the next {7.5} months! This is absolutely a dream come true and I am so thankful for the opportunity, even though a significant part of me is wanting to crouch into the fetal position and hide when I remember just how horrible my Spanish is.

So it could be worse…but I’m nowhere near fluency and my Spanish vocabulary extends to a whole of about 15 words, with such essentials as: “Hola” “Buenos días” “¿Donde está el baño?” ¿Cómo se llama? and the lyrics of la cucaracha song. Okay, I could be exaggerating just a little bit, but that doesn’t lessen my anxiety by any means.

But it’s too late to back out now. And I wouldn’t regardless. Everyone keeps asking “Why Christine? Why this? Why Spain? Why now?”

Well…I’m doing this for several reasons including but not limited to:

  1. Learning Spanish=lifelong goal. More on this later, because my love/hate relationship with the Spanish language needs its own post.
  2. Exposing myself to a new culture and exploring my Spanish roots (there are some way, waay back there.)
  3. My refusal to let fear of something (in this case leaving all that is familiar to me to move to a foreign country) prevent me from doing it. My father moved to the States not knowing English, my mother moved to Mexico not knowing Spanish; they’re a huge part of my inspiration to do this.
  4. Giving a big middle finger to the corporate world/job market until further notice ;)
  5. My slight obsession with Europe and travel hasn’t ceased since living in Greece
  6. Throw in a bit of soul-searching and desire to broaden my mind and life experiences…and there you have it.

…but really? It’s Spain. I’m just a 22 year-old recent college grad. No spouse, no mortgage, no kids, no ties. Why wouldn’t I do this?!
